What Happens In Therapy?

You will be encouraged to share your thoughts about what is on your mind, what is happening in your life, and so on. While the therapist will primarily listen, they will work with you to understand how those experiences relate to one another, whether relationships (including the one with your therapist) tend to follow specific patterns, and what your emotional responses are in relation to them.

You can expect your therapist to be supportive, but they will also challenge you to adopt new ways of thinking and help you in navigating your difficulties.

Your First Session

Starting therapy can feel intimidating. In the initial consultation, we will gather the essential information about you and your current difficulties, answer your questions, and assist you in determining the next steps forward.

The initial consultation will offer you the chance to discuss the challenges you are facing. The therapist will then speak with you about what the therapy will involve and what type (short-term or open-ended, group or individual) you both believe will be beneficial at this time. Taking your preferences into account, you will then be allocated a therapist, who you will work with on an ongoing basis for the duration of your therapy.

Therapy Group

A therapy group can help with many problems, including relationships and anxieties about others. The group is not a short-term cure because it can take time to learn to share with and trust in others, but the benefits of realising that you are not alone with difficult feelings and of hearing several other points of view and ways of thinking can be long-lasting and life-changing. The group offers a place to think about our habits when relating to others.

The group normally has up to 7 members and meets for 90 minutes weekly. Prior to joining, there are at least two, usually three, and sometimes more initial sessions in which the group can be considered without commitment.
